There's a lot of talk about how quiet this place is and how surprising it is that nobody's been murdered. Is the Barge really that bad?

I've also noticed that a lot of the inmates have a tendency to lie and avoid answering questions. I would expect that from criminals, but I heard that not everyone here has actually broken the law, so I was wondering if anyone could explain that gap for me.

I don't suppose anyone would be willing to tell me what professions they worked before coming, or maybe what occupations they have now that they're here? It would be nice to know what roles people fill in a place like this.

[Private to Martha]
Think you could spare some time to show me the 'CES'? Maybe we could even catch a drink after.

[Private to the Admiral]
Any chance I could get a coffeemaker and some of Jude's Italian Roast in my room? I haven't lied for.. days now. Even Peter would have agreed to those terms.

Nick Halden. I'm a recently arrived warden here and I had an interesting talk with your inmate, Jonathan. Unfortunately, he was pretty busy at the time and we couldn't continue our discussion. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to request that he meet with me for an hour, just on the deck. I really feel like we were getting somewhere.

So I hear. [He replied with a light smile. Murder, was the rumor. Messy murders always broke the voids of silence, he had been told. Apparently Martha believed the same. He had also been warned about jinxing it. The entire concept seemed to be a universal belief here on the Barge.]

If I didn't know better, Martha Jones, I would think you were trying to get out of giving me a tour in favor of getting me drunk. [His smile widened for a moment afterward.]

Nick Halden, if I was going to get you drunk, trust me I'd come up with a much smoother way of going about it! [She laughed easily, complete with a teasing roll of her eyes.] It'd probably involve something like 'Nick, fancy going and having a drink at the pub with me some time?' I'm rather a fan of the direct route.

[Most of the time, anyway. Besides, it wasn't as if Martha was chatting him up at all; she was just being friendly. He was new to the Barge and needed friends.] I was just wondering if ya'd gone in and met anyone else yet.

Fancy that. You know, I think I'd like that very much. [He replied to her hypothetical question, without his attitude faltering. Despite the potentially obvious interpretation, he wasn't flirting with her. Well, he was, but only in the way he flirted with every woman he spoke to. He knew better than to flirt with someone like Martha herself when she was entirely unaware of who he really was and bound to find out. Besides, even on a ship like this, a woman that smart and beautiful was bound to be claimed.]

Not yet. You'll be my first. [Another mischievous grin.] But I'd appreciate that tour first, even still.
